Overview
This workshop is based on Julie Hammond's book, The Pelvic Diaphragm: Treating Pain and Dysfunction from a Global Anatomical Perspective. Pelvic pain and dysfunction are multifaceted problems that affect both men and women and can have a profound impact on quality of life. Yet pelvic diaphragm dysfunction is often treated as if it exists in isolation—and it doesn't. A pelvis problem is never just a pelvis problem.
In this two-day workshop, we will take a deep dive into the intricate anatomy of both the male and female pelvis and pelvic diaphragm, from the perineum through to the fascial diaphragm of the endopelvic fascia. The aim of this workshop is to inspire and excite practitioners by making complex and often misunderstood anatomy relatable and clinically relevant. Particular emphasis is placed on the fascial and functional connections between the pelvic and respiratory diaphragms, introducing
contemporary anatomical concepts supported by current research.
Participants will leave with practical assessment strategies, fascial release techniques, self-release exercises for client homework, and experiential activities that can be immediately integrated into practice.
Once the local anatomy is understood, it is essential to appreciate how it fits into a broader global context. The pelvis is balanced within a larger tensegrity structure, with important fascial and functional relationships extending throughout the body. We will explore the connections between the pelvic diaphragm and the respiratory diaphragm, as well as the often-overlooked relationship between the feet, ankles, and pelvis.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the two days, you will:
- Have a clear understanding of pelvic and pelvic diaphragm anatomy and a deeper appreciation for its complexity and importance.
- Be able to assess the pelvis and understand its role within the body's global tensegrity structure.
- Explain the fascial and functional connections above and below the pelvis.
- Integrate breath and pelvic diaphragm function to either ease or stimulate the pelvic diaphragm.
- Understand the importance of treating global patterns before addressing local dysfunction.
- Apply practical techniques and strategies that support long-term change in clients experiencing pelvic pain and dysfunction.
A note about the practical component of the workshop:
All pelvic diaphragm techniques taught in this workshop are external and non-invasive. Techniques must always be applied within the therapist’s individual scope of practice, with appropriate informed consent obtained before treatment. The emphasis is on creating a safe, respectful learning environment while developing a greater understanding of the pelvic diaphragm and its relationship to the whole body.
