Topics to consider when choosing an RTO to study Massage and Myotherapy 

 

Please note: Massage & Myotherapy Australia highly recommends reading and understanding the terms and conditions of the education provider when considering any form of coursework from an RTO, a Massage & Myotherapy Australia Endorsed Activity or any provider of education, thoroughly BEFORE registering for a course. Massage & Myotherapy Australia also recommends to ask any questions about results, certification, refunds etc prior to payment.

Are they a Registered Training Organisation?
What is the accepted Qualification for membership?
Which colleges meet the Medibank,AHM, ARHG and HCF education criteria and will be accepted for Approved Provider Status?

Is the study by long distance, face-to-face (on-campus) or a combination of both?

ARE THEY A REGISTERED TRAINING ORGANISATION (RTO)?

The current qualification from the National Health Training Package from an RTO is required for eligibility for membership with Massage & Myotherapy Australia and also for Approved Provider Status with the individual Private Health Funds. There are many ‘colleges’ that are not RTOs teaching courses that claim to be from the National Health Training Package. This can be checked by searching for them on the National Training Information Service website (www.training.gov.au).

The education criteria for Membership and for Approved Provider Status with the individual Private Health Funds is:

Not all Private Health Funds will recognise Approved Provider Status with the above qualifications. Each Private Health Fund has its own specific requirements, including minimum education requirements. 

 

WHICH COLLEGES MEET THE MEDIBANK, AHM, ARHG AND HCF EDUCATION CRITERIA AND WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR APPROVED PROVIDER STATUS?

It is the responsibility of the RTO to deliver their education under the health fund conditions and meet the individual health fund criteria. Inquiries should be directed to the RTO. All RTOs are aware of the education criteria as set by Medibank, AHM , ARHG and HCF, which includes:

  • Direct entry into Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT50307,HLT52015,HLT52021)
  • HLT50302/HLT50307/HLT50312 must not include any components of the Certifcate IV in Massage Therapy Practice (HLT40302/HLT40307/HLT40312
  • The Diploma of Remedial Massage is delivered over a minimum duration period of 12 months for full-time study and 18 months for part-time study
  • Study must be completed on campus. Online or distance education is not accepted.
  • The Diploma of Remedial Massage must contain a minimum of 20% of the course as clinical training conducted on campus and supervised by a trainer with appropriate qualifications. Supervised clinic hours must be conducted on Campus as per the HLT Training package.
  • The following practical components are to be studied on campus:
    • Surface anatomy
    • Palpation
    • Clinical examination
    • Assessment of conditions
    • Treatment plans
    • Tactile therapies
    • Massage techniques and other associated therapeutics and techniques


Note: Completing components in private clinics and/or shop fronts is not considered student clinical practicum hours, training or on campus by the Health Funds.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) must be able to demonstrate the qualification meets the minimum duration period of 12 months for the Diploma of Remedial Massage as indicated above, this inlcudes previous study and RPL.

Recognition of Prior Learning for some subjects, that are required by the Private Health Funds to be delivered face to face on campus may not be accepted. Contact your College to ensure the delivery meets these requirements. 

The following RTOs have met the due diligence conducted by Massage & Myotherapy Australia for the above criteria. As some RTOs have blended learning, Massage & Myotherapy Australia membership applicants must include a letter from their RTO indicating they meet the Education Criteria .

IS THE STUDY BY LONG DISTANCE, FACE-TO-FACE (ON-CAMPUS) OR A COMBINATION OF BOTH?

The mode of study will affect eligibility for Approved Provider Status with the individual Private Health Funds. Private Health Funds will not accept qualifications that are gained completely via long-distance or online learning.


DOES THE RTO HAVE A STUDENT CLINIC OR DO THEY EXPECT STUDENTS TO FIND A CLINIC TO COMPLETE THEIR CLINICAL PRACTICE HOURS?

Private Health Funds do not accept qualifications where clinical practice hours are obtained off-campus. Private Health Funds require clinical practice hours to be completed in an on-campus student clinic.


HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO COMPLETE A DIPLOMA OF REMEDIAL MASSAGE?

A Diploma of Remedial Massage will take twelve months to complete. Some of the Private Health Funds will not accept a qualification that is completed in less than 12 months duration (full-time) or 18 months (part-time).


WHAT DOES IT COST TO COMPLETE THE DIPLOMA OF REMEDIAL MASSAGE?

Massage & Myotherapy Australia recommends potential students ‘shop’ around for an RTO as the prices may vary from RTO to RTO. However, potential students must keep in mind the above factors, mode of delivery, duration of course and clinic hours.


DOES MASSAGE & MYOTHERAPY AUSTRALIA RECOMMEND SPECIFIC RTOS?

Massage & Myotherapy Australia is unable to recommend one RTO over another. The Association relies on the National Training Information Service and information obtained from the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) regarding RTOs registration, any restrictions on them and eligibility to deliver qualifications.
