Description:
A Polyvagal and Somatic Approach to Healing Trauma
This webinar explores how trauma—both physical and psychological—can be reflected in the body and nervous system. Through the lens of somatic wisdom and polyvagal theory, participants will examine how overwhelming experiences can become encoded within physiological patterns, shaping posture, breath, emotional responses, and nervous system regulation.
Building on the work of Stephen Porges and his development of Polyvagal Theory, this session explores how the autonomic nervous system organises around safety, connection, and survival. When trauma occurs, the nervous system may become stuck in patterns of fight, flight, or shutdown, which can continue to influence behaviour, perception, and bodily experience long after the original event has passed.
Participants will explore how trauma reflexes manifest through the body, including protective muscular patterns, changes in breath, altered sensory perception, and shifts in autonomic regulation. Understanding these responses allows practitioners to recognise that many trauma symptoms are not pathology, but rather adaptive survival strategies that once served to protect the individual.
A key focus of the webinar is learning how to support the nervous system in gently moving toward regulation and safety. Participants will be introduced to practical somatic strategies that help the body build internal and external resources, allowing individuals to safely process sensations and emotional experiences without becoming overwhelmed.
The session will also explore the importance of co-regulation and interpersonal resonance, highlighting how the presence of a safe and attuned practitioner can help support the nervous system’s return to regulation. Through embodied presence and relational safety, the body often begins to reorganise naturally toward greater balance and resilience.
Participants will learn practical skills for “riding the wave” of the nervous system, supporting clients in tracking sensation, building capacity, and cultivating greater tolerance for internal experience. These approaches help restore a sense of embodiment, safety, and connection to the body.
