The latest information from the Association
Guest Editor: Sonya Leslight

Since becoming a Conference Committee Member in 2010, I have loved being a part of the awesome team that makes our conferences a standout weekend year after year. I have recently been elected Chairperson of the Conference Committee, and I am honoured to take on this role, and continue working alongside our Conference Co-ordinator David Sheehan, the Association office team, and our amazing Committee who keep their ears to the ground to bring the best of the best to our Conferences each year.
We have a fantastic line-up of speakers this year, including Elicia Crook, Robert De Nardis, Rob Granter, John Kirkwood, Garry Lavis, Craig Quinlivan and Steve Stahl. You can learn more and register for the 2022 National Conference here.
I look forward to seeing you all in Adelaide in May or further down the track at future Conferences.

Respect Massage by ABMP

Massage & Myotherapy Australia partners at Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP) have released Respect Massage – a complete resource to protect massage therapists and bodyworkers from sexual solicitors. Respect Massage was originally created by Massage Therapist Joyce Gauthier to empower massage therapists to make it clear they do not mix sex and massage, and educate the massage therapy community to spot, deter, and escape from clients soliciting sex.
We invite all therapists to read the articles, watch the videos, download the free marketing materials and client resources, take the continuing education course, and join together in community.
Find out more on the Respect Massage website click here.

IMPORTANT MEMBER SURVEY

The Australian National Natural Therapies Workforce Survey

This survey is a collaboration of Australian professional associations. Its aim is to produce an accurate snapshot of the natural therapies workforce in Australia. It will update our knowledge of who we are, how we practise, and critical issues affecting our practices. It will be used to advance the interests of our professions, including in the upcoming Federal election.
Download information about the survey here Participant Information Sheet.
The survey takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey, a link will be available for you to collect 5 CPE points for completing the survey and to provide your details if you’d like to receive a copy of the results when the study is completed. To complete the survey click here.

Massage Therapy and Domestic Violence Research Study

Dr Sarah Fogarty, a researcher at Western Sydney University (and a massage therapist), Professor Phillipa Hay and Professor Kathleen Baird are conducting the following research project: Understanding massage therapist’s knowledge to recognise, respond and refer to domestic and family violence in clinical practice. (WSU APPROVAL NUMBER H14636).
Massage & Myotherapy Australia members have been invited to participate in the online survey, which is designed to learn more about massage therapists knowledge to recognise, respond and refer to domestic and family violence in clinical practice.
The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. You can change your mind at any time and stop completing the survey without consequence. The research data gathered from this survey is anonymous so data will only be published in a form that does not identify members. The survey will be available for three months so you will have three months to consider participation.

EMPLOYMENT CONTRACTS

Update for independent contractors

Two recent High Court Rulings, have highlighted the importance of reviewing employment contracts. Whether intentionally, or unintentionally, it’s against the law for a business to incorrectly treat their employees as contractors or vice versa. It’s important that employers and contractors understand and familiarise themselves with the distinction. The two High Court rulings have emphasised the importance of the written contract.

FIRE SAFETY

Spontaneous Combustion or Spontaneous Chemical Causation or Self-Heating?

Marcus Barnett is a Station Officer and has been a firefighter for 30+ years and a Fire Investigator in the South East Region based on the Gold Coast for the last 15 years. During Marcus’ time, he has attended and investigated several structural fires at massage clinics and laundry services that launder for massage clinics. The cause of these fires has often been attributed to spontaneous combustion of cotton massage towels contaminated with massage oils.
For more information on how this happens and how to prevent this from happening, please click here.
