ACT Member Update on Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse
ACT Health Directorate (ACTHD), in collaboration with Canberra Health Services has guided and overseen implementation of recommendations from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (the Royal Commission) that relate to health services in the ACT.
The Royal Commission made several recommendations about the need to ensure that records and information that may be relevant to allegations of child sexual abuse are retained for at least 45 years, as they may prove vital to victims and survivors of institutional abuse taking civil action.
Information on record keeping practices is available on the Territory Records website which provides information to assist institutions to identify and retain records that may become relevant to an actual or alleged incident of child sexual abuse. Additional guidance has also been developed by the Council of Australasian Archives and Records Authorities. To learn more about the Royal Commission’s recommendations, please view the Final Report.
