A Mindfulness Approach to Posture: The UPON Method
The postural imbalances of sedentary people have implications related to individual pain, injury, mood, and dysfunction. For therapists and fitness trainers, the problem of posture is central to the rehabilitation process. Herein lies a subsequent problem: how to correct the posture? To achieve a practical and intuitive approach to postural rehabilitation, the Upright, Proud, Open, Neutral (UPON) Method has been developed. It can be considered a type of postural yoga, meaning the method attempts to create a mindful connection with the body – a sense of feeling how the body is and how it could be. This is a very practical approach and can be easily integrated into any clinical practice without needing to change how a practitioner treats patients or needing to acquire, use or maintain any special equipment.
